

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) recently participated in the 2026 World Wildlife Day and International Forest Day celebrations, global events designated by the United Nations and jointly organized by the Lekki Urban Forestry and Animal Shelter Initiative (LUFASI) Nature Park.
The event, themed “Forests and Wildlife: Strengthening Livelihood and Resilience in Nigeria,” was held from March 18–19, 2026, at the LUFASI Nature Park, located along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.
In his opening remarks, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, emphasized the critical role of environmental protection in sustaining livelihoods and building resilience.
Dr. Ajayi, who was represented at the event by the Director of Natural Resources Protection, Mrs. Oluwakemi Bankole, reiterated the Agency’s commitment to safeguarding the environment through strategic partnerships and public awareness initiatives.
The Chairman and Environmentalist of LUFASI, Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi, provided an overview of the foundation and highlighted the primary objectives of the awareness programme.
According to him, the initiative is committed to protecting ecosystems and promoting sustainable development. He stressed the urgent need for increased awareness of sustainable practices, noting that the Earth has continued to be significantly impacted by human activities.
Mr. Majekodunmi also spoke extensively on the importance of proper disposal and management of plastics, citing their harmful effects on ecosystems.

Further contributions were made by Mrs. Busayo Alabi, a renowned herbal specialist, who explored the importance of medicinal plants in preserving health and supporting livelihoods.

Additionally, Dr. Samuel Odewo of the Forestry Research Institute of Ibadan delivered an insightful presentation on the role of medicinal and aromatic plants in enhancing ecosystem resilience and supporting animal health.
Key topics discussed during the event included: wildlife and forestry awareness for Lagos residents, principles and protection laws guiding environmental conservation in the State, and the economic significance of forests.
The event attracted participation from various environmental, academic, and media organizations, including LASEPA, the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Management (TCEBCEM), University of Lagos, Wild Africa, the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), and the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems.
The programme concluded with a guided tour of the LUFASI Nature Park, providing participants with firsthand experience of conservation efforts and reinforcing the importance of preserving both flora and fauna for the sustainability of ecosystems in Lagos State.
