In commemoration of the #worldenvironmentday2024 , officials from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), led by the Director of Environmental Sustainability (E-Waste & Plastic Solutions), Mrs. Adedayo Adebayo and officials from the British Deputy High Commission, led by Mr. George Obasi, embarked on a visit to Hinckley Recycling Nigeria Limited situated in Gbogije-Ibeju, Lagos.
The purpose of the visit was to commemorate the World Environment Day Celebration , gain insight into circularity in e-waste management through e- wastes recycling efforts undertaken by Hinckley Recycling.
Upon arrival, the team was warmly received by Mr. Israel Olagunju, the Research & Operation Supervisor at Hinckley Recycling-an accredited partner of LASEPA which specializes in electronic waste recycling and plays a vital role in mitigating the environmental impacts of wrong management of electrical & electronic wastes.
During the tour of the facility, Mr. Olagunju provided a comprehensive overview of the sorting, dismantling, and shredding processes involved in e-waste recycling. He emphasized the importance of proper management of e-waste which is to prevent its harmful impact on both human health and the environment.
Furthermore, the team was shown the workshop where Hinckley Recycling produces portable solar lanterns. These lanterns not only provide basic lighting and USB mobile charging but also contribute to the circular economy by utilizing second-life batteries sourced from electronic waste. Each lantern produced prevents approximately 2.5 kg of e-waste from ending up in landfills.
Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Adebayo Adedayo commended Hinckley Recycling for its dedication to environmental stewardship and stressed the importance of circular economy principles in waste management. She further extended her appreciation to the British Deputy High Commission for their interest in collaboration with the Agency to jointly tackle environmental challenges.
