The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) yesterday joined stakeholders across the globe to commemorate Global Recycling Day 2026, an event organised by the African Lending Hands Foundation.

The programme, themed “Don’t Think Waste – Think Opportunity,” was held at Oriade Local Council Development Area in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change as a collective global responsibility.

Represented by the Director, Partnership, Grants Management and Innovations, Mrs. Olabisi Shonibare, noted that climate change is not limited to Lagos or Nigeria but is a worldwide concern requiring unified action.

Dr. Ajayi stated that Global Recycling Day underscores the global nature of environmental sustainability, drawing parallels with the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as a reminder of how interconnected the world is. He stressed that the actions taken today would determine the future of communities, urging citizens to take ownership of environmental protection.

He further encouraged participants, particularly youths, to act as ambassadors of change by sharing knowledge gained with their families, schools, and communities.

According to him, “we are all stakeholders in governance, and everyone has a role to play in safeguarding the environment.”
Addressing the growing challenge of waste management, Dr. Ajayi pointed out the strain on infrastructure caused by population growth and changing lifestyles, especially the increased use of plastics.

He warned that many plastic materials take years to decompose, contributing significantly to environmental pollution and climate change.

He advocated for deliberate actions such as recycling, reuse, and responsible consumption. Emphasizing the concept of waste-to-wealth, he explained that recyclable materials such as plastics should be properly sorted and handed over to recyclers, who in turn convert them into new products while creating economic value.

Dr. Ajayi also introduced the concept of upcycling, where waste materials are creatively reused without being broken down, citing examples such as furniture made from plastic bottles. He reiterated that waste should no longer be seen as useless but as a valuable resource.

He commended ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to reduce environmental pollution, including policies discouraging single-use plastics and styrofoam, and encouraged the adoption of reusable and biodegradable alternatives.

In recognition of his contribution as Guest Speaker, Dr. Ajayi was presented with a plaque by the organisers.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Executive Chairman of Oriade Local Council Development Area, Hon. Rasaq Akorede Olojede, LASEPA Zonal Head for Amuwo Odofin ll, Mrs Mosaku Adetola, top government officials, public/ private primary and secondary schools, among others.
